Editing Literary Research Papers

Once you complete major improvements to your research paper, you can focus on every word, letter, and punctuation mark. Editing helps you correct errors in punctuation, mechanics, spelling, grammar, and usage. You'll also want to make sure that you have correctly used Modern Language Association (MLA) style. The following activities will help you.

Editing In-Text Citations for MLA Style

Whenever you use ideas or direct quotations from others, you need to credit the source. You do so to show who originated an idea, to avoid plagiarism, and to allow readers to explore the same materials in their own research.

All credits begin with an in-text citation that names the source and page number (if there is one) and refers to a complete entry on the works-cited page. The simplest citation names the title and author in the text and provides the page number in parentheses after the borrowed material, before the period.

In "On Faerie Stories," Tolkien argues that Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass are not actually fantasy because they are framed by a dream. Everything in Wonderland is unreal, and the reader knows that it is. Also, Gulliver's Travels is not fantasy because the tiny people and giants Gulliver encounters are in the Primary World, simply removed by distance (5).

Revising Comparison-Contrast Essays

Writers often find prewriting and drafting to be the most challenging steps because they have to start with a blank page. Now you have a full page or more, so the work from here on out should be easier.

Writing a Comparison-Contrast Essay

You've chosen two topics to compare and contrast, conducted research about them, and created a working thesis statement. You're ready to draft your comparison-contrast essay. The following activities will help you build a strong beginning, develop middle paragraphs, and create an ending that effectively wraps up your essay.

Writing the Beginning Paragraph

The first sentence or two of your comparison-contrast essay needs to grab your reader's interest. You can experiment with a number of different strategies to write an effective lead.

Write a lead sentence.

Experiment with leads for your essay using each strategy below. Read the examples for ideas. Then choose your favorite lead to start your essay.

  1. Start with a fascinating question.

    Would you rather be completely normal, with all the typical abilities and disabilities, or exceptional in one or two areas but impaired in others?

  2. Start with a thoughtful quotation.

    "Nobody realizes that some people expend tremendous energy merely to be normal."

  3. Provide an anecdote.

    We've all been stuck on a slow bus, starting and stopping in heavy traffic, crammed with others just waiting to get to a destination. When the patent clerk Albert Einstein was stuck on such a bus, he imagined instead riding on a photon at the speed of light . . . and came up with the Special Theory of Relativity.

  4. Make a shocking statement.

    People with synesthesia process sound with the part of their brains meant to see pictures. As a result, they see music. When the rest of us hear a D major chord, they might see a bright blue mountain or a vibrantly orange rabbit.

Prewriting for Comparison-Contrast Essays

Analyzing the similarities and differences between two things is one of the most fundamental thinking skills. It is also one of the most powerful. Comparing two candidates helps you choose the better leader and reject the dud. Discerning the key differences between two claims allows you to tell truth from falsehood. When you write a comparison-contrast essay, you use this powerful skill to understand both topics fully. You'll start by finding topics worthy of your attention.

Prewriting to Select Two Topics

If your topics truly interest you, analyzing them will be easy. You might also want to select two interesting topics from a current area of study so that your comparison-contrast essay can help you in more than one class. If you don't know what you want to write about, you can start by selecting an interesting general category from the Basics of Life list and thinking of two topics within that category.

For example, if you choose "Personality," you can compare two types of personality (introvert vs. extrovert) or two tests that measure intelligence (Stanford-Binet vs. Wechsler Intelligence Scale) or two psychological conditions (Asperger's syndrome vs. savant syndrome). If you choose "Food," you can compare and contrast two types of cuisine (French vs. German), or two processes for preserving meat (smoking vs. salt curing), or the history of two different drinks (coffee vs. tea).

Warm-Up for Comparison-Contrast Essays

People often say, "You can't compare apples and oranges." Of course you can. Apples and oranges are both fist-sized fruits with an outer protective covering, sweet inner flesh, and seeds. Both grow on trees and appear in supermarkets. Both come in delicious varieties. These fruits are different in many ways as well: color, texture, taste, vitamins, acidity, availability, seasons, and so on. By comparing and contrasting apples and oranges, you learn more about each.

This kind of analytical thinking can help you understand just about any two topics, whether protagonists in novels or types of respiratory systems in animals or generals in the Civil War. In this unit, you'll select two topics from your own areas of study or from personal interest and compare and contrast them.

When you compare two topics, you find the similarities between them. When you contrast them, you focus on differences. Yes, you can compare and contrast apples and oranges, but your thinking needs to use parallel structure. In other words, you compare and contrast the appearance of both, and then the taste, and then the color. You shouldn't say, "While an orange has a tangy, slightly acidic taste, an apple comes in different colors." You shouldn't compare the taste of the orange to the color of the apple.

As you can see, a comparison-contrast essay needs to keep ideas neatly sorted. You have two separate topics, the similarities and differences between them, and the many points of comparison and contrast. This unit will help you manage all of this complexity, thinking effectively about your topics and developing a clear, thorough, and compelling essay.

You can warm up your thinking by comparing and contrasting yourself and one of your friends or family members.

Thinking About People

You may have a lot in common with a friend or family member, or very little in common, or some combination. You can analyze the similarities and differences between yourself and a person you like by writing about each of you, point by point. Revising Résumés and Cover Letters

So you've done the hard part, actually writing the résumé and cover letter. Take a little break if you can. Then come back to them. You want to make sure these two documents do the best job of representing you to a potential employer. Is there some critical piece of information that you forgot to include? Is there some extraneous piece of information that you don't need? In revision, you can make sure your documents have all the "right stuff."

Revising for Key Details

Remember that your cover letter and résumé are really meant for the employer, not for you. You already know who you are. The employer needs to know, so these documents should provide the key details without distraction. You can check for details by reviewing item 3 on the prewriting activity "Take the Employer's Perspective."

3. What kind of employee would make life better for this contact person?

A part-time reporter who can take any assignment, attend an event, interview those involved, take photos, research carefully, check facts, write a news article or feature article, create an effective headline, and digitally submit materials on or before deadline.

What employer needs did you fail to address in your cover letter and résumé? For example, Joyce realized that she forgot to mention that she is a skilled photographer, so she can provide images for her articles. She added a line to the "Skills and Qualifications" section of her résumé.

Writing Your Résumé

If you've done your prewriting work, creating a résumé should be fairly straightforward. Simply fill in each section with your information. The activities below will help you use parallel construction and telegraphic style.

Writing with Parallel Structure and Telegraphic Style

All similar elements in your résumé should use parallel structure, which means the same grammatical form. For example, each work experience item should list job title, employer, dates of employment, and duties—in that order, with the same punctuation and treatment for each element. By contrast, lists of skills and qualifications might all be adjectives:

Prewriting for Résumés and Cover Letters

Though your reader begins with your cover letter and ends with your résumé, you need to work the other way around. Your first step is to create a general résumé that captures the most important details about your experience and education, for any job. Once you have a résumé, you can adjust it to fit a specific job opportunity. And then you can write a separate cover letter to apply for the job. Start by thinking about who you are.

Prewriting to Gather Details About Yourself

Before you write your résumé, you should think about your experiences and skills. At this point you don't need to worry about résumé sections or parallel structure or "telegraphic style." You just need to think about what you've learned, and what you have to offer employers. Answering questions can help.

  1. What three words would friends use to describe you and why?

    They would call me "funny and intense and weird." I like to make jokes to get friends to laugh, but when I'm serious about something, I'm super serious. Also, I'm serious about things most people aren't, like whether food can touch on a plate or whether your toothbrush can go in a cup with others (it shouldn't).

  2. What three words would teachers use to describe you and why?

    They would call me "hard-working, smart, and nice." I want to get good grades, so I work hard in class and on homework. That makes me come off as smart because I'm well prepared. But I'm also nice. I help other people who are having trouble.

  3. What would your dream job be?

    I'd like to be an air-traffic controller, preferably in the Navy on an aircraft carrier. I love everything about airplanes, especially military airplanes, but I get motion sick, so I'd rather be controlling them than piloting them. An aircraft carrier is probably big enough I wouldn't get motion sick.

  4. What job are you best suited for right now?

    I've been a lifeguard for two summers, so I know that job really well. I'd like to move up to be pool manager. It's a lot more hours but also a lot more pay. I could use the money for college.

  5. What experience do you have that suits you for the job?

    Guarding, cleaning up the pool, staffing the front desk, being in the locker-rooms, repairs, filter cleaning, working with everybody, you name it. Also, I've been a stocker and bagger at Rioldi's for two years, so I know about hard work and following directions.

  6. What education do you have that suits you for the job?

    I'm about to graduate high school. They want someone with at least a high school diploma. Also, I have Lifeguard Instructor certification. That's the latest one.

  7. Have you gotten any awards or honors?

    I'm in National Honor Society and I've got a letter for Swim Team.

Writing for Assessment

A writing assessment gives you a short time to write in response to a prompt.

"Imagination is more important than knowledge." —Albert Einstein

How can this quotation be true? As a child, you spent much time immersed in imagination, but now as a high school student, you've spent 13+ years pursuing knowledge. What's the relationship between imagination and knowledge? Write an essay that defines each term and tells how they relate. Explain Einstein's position but then state your own position, supporting it with logic and evidence.

To do so, you should use a shortened form of the writing process:

Prewriting (5 Minutes)

Answer the PAST questions.

Purpose? Define imagination and knowledge, tell how they relate, explain Einstein's position and state and support your own.

Audience? The reader of the test

Subject? Imagination and knowledge

Type? Position/argument essay

Write a focus statement.

Imagination and knowledge are like energy and matter: the knowledge is the solid stuff, and the imagination sets it into motion.

Revising Research Papers

Congratulations! You've completed a first draft of your research paper, pouring your ideas out onto the pages. Take a short break, or at least a long breath. Now that you have a first draft, you have something to work with. Some parts may be great just as they are. Some parts may need more details, or better wording, or rearranging, or rewriting. That's okay! Revision helps you improve your first draft in major ways. The following activities will guide you.

Revising to Elaborate Details

In the warm-up to this unit, you discovered that basic research answers questions like who, what, where, and when, but rigorous research moves on to deeper questions like why, how, could, would, and should. You can answer basic questions with facts. To answer deeper questions, you'll need many other types of details: explanations, statistics, anecdotes, quotations, reflections, and even visuals. You need to elaborate your ideas.

In the following paragraphs from "The Man Writ Large," note how the topic sentence introduces the key event. Afterward, the writer uses a variety of details to fully elaborate the event, helping readers understand the why, how, could, and should of the situation. Click on the callouts to view each part.

Topic Sentence That indomitable spirit would have its greatest test a week later on July 1. Explanation While most of the regular army troops focused on a siege at Santiago, the Rough Riders, the Buffalo Soldiers, and a few regular army regiments sought to dislodge Spanish control at El Canarey. Doing so would prevent attacks on the American flanks during the siege ("Spanish"). Roosevelt would once again lead his troops uphill into the face of an entrenched foe with superior weaponry. Statistic Roosevelt, however, had a 10 to 1 advantage of soldiers against the 500 Spanish defenders. Just as he had done at the docks at Tampa Bay, Roosevelt jostled his Rough Riders forward to bypass the regular-army regiments and begin the assault on Kettle Hill. Anecdote A Buffalo Soldier asked, "Who do you think you are?" and was told, "Rough Riders going to take that hill. Get out of the way or fall in with us." The Buffalo Soldier replied, "I'll be damned if those Rough Riders will get ahead of me!" Roosevelt thus ended up effectively commanding his own men and that of the separate regiment. Quotation A Rough Rider said of that sudden battlefield brotherhood, "I most positively assert that every face I looked into, both white and black, had a broad grin upon it"(Gardner 161).

The regiments ground forward, eventually taking Kettle Hill, but gunfire still rained down on them from San Juan Hill. Amid the withering fire, Roosevelt raised his pistol and shouted, "Now by God, men! Let's charge 'em!" He jumped a fence and ran down Kettle Hill toward San Juan Hill, but in the noise and confusion, only five of his own men followed. He had to retreat to gather the others, as Roosevelt remembered it: "Even while I taunted them bitterly for not having followed me, it was all I could do not to smile at the look of injury and surprise that came over their faces" (Gardner 167-169). Mounting his horse Little Texas, Roosevelt led his soldiers in the charge up San Juan Hill, and to victory. Diary Entry In his July 1 diary entry, Roosevelt scribbled in pencil, "Rose at 4. Big battle. Commanded regiment. Helped extreme front of firing line. Under shell and rifle fire."Reflection Later, he would dub the charge up San Juan Hill "the great day of my life" ("T.R."). A battle that had been expected to take two hours stretched to twelve, with 300 Spanish casualties to the 500 U.S. casualties ("Spanish").
